If you’ve read my most recent articles, you’ve probably noticed that they are mostly about the negative impacts of fast fashion. You probably feel helpless in the face of these big companies that have so much money that they seem indestructible. After all, our individual impact is so small when we think of the importance of these companies in the world. It’s David against Goliath. Do I have to remind you that David wins at the end? Today, I get into positivism and offer you an easy way to think about our planet every time you shop online!
The extension for Chrome DoneGood is installed on my computer for over a month now, and already I plan the purchase of shoes made in Peru by well-paid artisans, with quality local materials, and my next bralette, created by a company that helps single mothers to work while caring for their children, and who does not wish to objectify women (yes, it is possible to buy underwear elsewhere than the Senza or the Vie en Rose!). For those with Apple products, an application is also available in the App Store!
What is DoneGood?
DoneGood is a directory of sustainable and ethical consumer products. It acts as a search engine among a selective database. DoneGood brings together companies that all have the same goal: to offer products that respect the human as well as the planet. These companies exist in large numbers, and DoneGood helps you discover them! DoneGood is based on the principle that by giving our money to a company, we encourage it to continue production. This is how DoneGood’s primary goal is to introduce brands with these values into their philosophy.
You can use it directly on the website, or you can install the extension on your Chrome browser (if you do not have Chrome, what a great reason to change browser!). When the extension is installed, it will notify you when you are on a DoneGood certified site. When you do a Google search for a consumer product, DoneGood will offer you directly certified brands.
The brands proposed are not popular brands, but you can be sure that these brands are taking concrete actions to offer products that have a positive impact on our planet. As the general barrier to buying such products is often the price, DoneGood offers discounts for some of these sites, allowing you to take advantage of them and reduce the impact on your wallet.
Why trust DoneGood?
DoneGood is registered a public-benefit company (PBC). This means that the have a legal obligation to fulfill a social mission. In the case of DoneGood, this mission extends from human rights, to the environment, through gender equality, the fair remuneration of workers and the use of sustainable materials. The difference with a non-profit organization (NPO) is that they can still make a profit. The goal of having a PBC registration is, for DoneGood, to prove that it is possible to be a profitable company while having humanistic and environmental values.
To evaluate companies that wish to be part of the directory, DoneGood uses the standards of certain certifications like B-Corp, GOTS, Fair Trade, et Rain Forest Alliance. They also conduct interviews with the founders of these companies to ensure that they respect their values. In addition, DoneGood is open to public comment and comment, which makes it possible to have some companies added to the directory, or even to say if some companies should not be part of it. DoneGood does not ask companies for an up-front paiement to be part of the directory. A small part of the profits are theirs if someone buys a product via the DoneGood website. Everyone wins!
Finally, DoneGood is a member of B Lab, the community around B-corp certification. B-corp is the highest company standard with social and environmental values. In addition, DoneGood is a member of the 1% for the Planet group, which means that at least 1% of gross revenues are donated directly to an NPO that aims to protect the environment.
